Do Nintendo Wii games purchased in the USA work on British game consoles?

No. Games and consoles have region codes – NTSC in America, and PAL in Europe. There is a map of which regions have which region code at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PAL-NTSC-SECAM.svg
Games purchased in one region don't work with consoles from other regions.
This goes for all DVD's, and most consoles.
